This June, the Cook County Historical Society is thrilled to feature Sue Rauschenfels as the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery’s local Artist of the Month for June!
Growing up in a small Northern Minnesota town in the 1960s, Sue’s childhood was deeply rooted in nature. She spent countless hours exploring the outdoors, building forts, climbing trees, and navigating friendships with her six sisters. This early connection to the woods instilled a lifelong love for nature, which beautifully translates into her art. It’s no surprise that she often paints trees from the heart, honoring them for the gifts they provide.
Sue's artwork vibrantly captures her love for nature, color, people, and a touch of whimsy. She enjoys weaving stories into her pieces, often depicting scenes as she envisions or dreams them, rather than strictly realistic narratives. Currently, Sue is delving into abstract art, embracing the exciting challenge of expanding her artistic voice.
After retiring from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2009, Sue began painting full-time. Though self-taught, she has enriched her skills through art classes and workshops both locally and internationally, deeply valuing the inspiration and support from her creative mentors. She is an active member of the Lake Superior Watercolor Society, Artists of Minnesota, Lake Superior Abstract Group, and Arrowhead Artists.
You can find Sue's captivating artwork in various regional galleries, and her pieces have been featured in national juried exhibitions.
