Since 2019, the North Shore Artists League has fostered a vibrant community of artists living and creating along the majestic shores of Lake Superior. United by a shared love of place, our members—working in mediums from glass to felt, oils to metal—draw inspiration from the vast skies, boreal forests, and the powerful presence of the inland sea.

In our 2025 exhibition, Echoes of Water, Wilderness, and Wonder, 33 artists reflect on the raw beauty and quiet magic of this extraordinary landscape.

Come experience the North Shore through the eyes—and hands—of its artists.

The exhibit will run through August 10.

A Cook County Historical Society favorite returns for the third year in a row! Stories that Matter: Women of Cook County will be back at the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery on July 31, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.

Join us in learning more about influential Cook County women, including Eleanor Woods, Eleanor Waha, and Hazel Belvo. The Historical Society is excited to announce that Hazel Belvo will be presenting during the event along with CCHS staff.

Eleanor Woods lived in the lighthouse keeper’s house (now the current History Museum along with her husband, John Wood (who was the Grand Marais lighthouse keeper between 1902 and 1921.), and who was active in the local community, specifically with the public library.

Eleanor Waha was born and raised in Cook County, MN, and was an incredibly instrumental and active volunteer for a variety of organizations, including the cancer screening clinic, the North Shore Nursing Home, the Maple Hill Fire Department, 4H, the Cook County Historical Society and more. She won Citizen of the Year in 1979 from the Grand Marais Lion’s Club. After graduating high school in 1941, she attended weather bureau school and worked in places such as the US Weather Bureau in Alaska.

Hazel Belvo is a well-known artist and educator who has been influential in the feminist art movement, including as the co-founder of the Women’s Art Registry of Minnesota, which helped bring women artists to the forefront of the art community during the feminist movement in the 1970s. Hazel spent time in Grand Portage during her marriage to George Morrison, where she painted several versions of Spirit Tree, which she is well known for. She was also an artist in residence and eventually mentor and teacher at the Grand Marais Art Colony.

"Never-Forgotten: Col. William Colvill, Minnesota’s Magnificent Civil War Hero," featuring Steve Hoffbeck

Why did Minnesotans love and admire Colonel William Colvill, Minnesota’s gigantic 6’5” Civil War hero---and why did Colvill have a homestead located just east of Grand Marais?

The Cook County Historical Society is pleased to present Steve Hoffbeck, a Minnesota-born-and-raised author, who will explore these questions, which are answered in his newest book, Colvill Smiled:” The Legend of the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Regiment at Gettysburg, at the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery in Grand Marais on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, 5:30-6:30 p.m., followed by a discussion and a book-signing opportunity. Colvill Smiled is now available at booksellers everywhere (and at the historical society’s bookshop).

Our speaker, Steve Hoffbeck, is a self-described old but lively Minnesotan who grew up as a farmer’s son near Morgan. His first book, The Haymakers, was a Minnesota Book Award winner. Hoffbeck, a recently retired professor (MSU Moorhead), and his wife, Dianne, live in Barnesville, Minn., and have four adult children and six grandchildren.

Hoffbeck has presented illustrated history programs for many years in every corner of Minnesota---including talks about baseball history, World War II, and legendary Minnesotans---at colleges, libraries, civic groups, and at historical societies -including Mill City Museum and Minnesota History Center.

This event is part of the Cook County Historical Society's Centennial Celebration in 2025. Other announced events are a presentation and pie social with local author Staci Drouillard at the Chippewa City Church on July 15, our Centennial Anniversary dinner, which will take place on September 23.
