We are excited to announce our August Local Artist of the Month, Paula Sundet Wolf. A long-time resident of the North Shore, Paula's work is a tribute to the region she calls home, showcasing her unique talent in both traditional basketry and oil painting.

Paula's artistic journey began early. "Drawing, painting, and creating have been a part of my life since I began studying my mother's art books when she was taking classes," she shares. This early inspiration turned into a lifelong passion that led her to pursue many art courses and a Master's degree in Anthropology of Art.

Her deep connection to the North Woods is most evident in her intricate, hand-coiled baskets. For 37 years, Paula has been gathering local materials, including sweet grass, sedges, iris, cattails, and pine needles. She explains, "I learned how to make red osier baskets, and began teaching myself coiled baskets using our beautiful sweet grass. Soon I was experimenting with other local materials... enjoying the rich variety of scents and colors."

In addition to her basketry, Paula expresses her appreciation for the area through her oil paintings. Her work captures the essence of the North Shore landscape, allowing viewers to see the familiar surroundings through her eyes. "I have a deep appreciation for the North woods and its resources, and like to convey that appreciation through my baskets and oil paintings," she says. "I hope you enjoy seeing the North Shore of Lake Superior through my work."
