JHP May Local Artist of the Month: James Ellis

Guiding Light, by James Ellis

The Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery is pleased to announce James Ellis as the May Local Artist of the Month. A contemporary realist oil painter, Ellis brings a collection of work deeply rooted in the dramatic and ever-changing landscapes of the North Shore and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. His paintings serve as a bridge between the storied traditions of 18th and 19th-century Realism and the immediate, raw beauty of the Lake Superior region as it exists today.

The path to painting began unexpectedly for Ellis, sparked by a personal disability that redirected his focus toward canvas. This transition led to years of intimate observation within the natural area, providing him with specialized knowledge of the environment that he translates through each brushstroke. His work does not merely replicate a scene; it translates the emotional resonance of the wilderness into a visual format that invites viewers to look closer at the world around them.

Ellis utilizes the alla prima technique, where his brush and palette knife work together to transform a blank canvas into a tangible short story. By emphasizing texture, he is able to capture the specific physical sensations of the North Shore, from the delicate, papery quality of birch bark to the heavy, dynamic forms of geological structures worn down by centuries of waves.

At the heart of this exhibition is the theme of preservation. Ellis views his role as an artist as one of documentation, capturing the essence of vanishing places and scenes that are often destined to be lost to time or environmental change.

James’ work will be on display through the month of May.
