July Local Artist of the Month, Julie Arthur
Julie Arthur began her fiber arts journey in 1972 after taking a weaving class at the University of Minnesota, subsequently teaching herself through decades of hands-on experience aside from a brief 2011 course in rep weaving. By 1973, she expanded her skills into spinning—initially using a drop spindle before transitioning to an Ashford wheel—and later mastered yarn dyeing. Operating from a studio filled with looms and materials, she transforms hand-spun wools and hand-dyed threads into unique rugs, scarves, shrugs, and shawls, regularly experimenting with new techniques and reviving old patterns. Deeply inspired by the nature surrounding her home, Julie lives with her husband on the north shore of Lake Superior, where she balances her craft with passions for family, gardening, canoeing, and hiking.
