October Local Artist of the Month: Kerry Lane

The Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery is thrilled to announce Kerry Lane as the Local Artist of the Month for October.

As a photographer, Lane has a special fondness for the Gunflint Trail, the North Shore of Lake Superior, and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). “I am interested not only in the beauty of the landscape, but also in documenting what it feels like to spend time within it,” Lane says, crediting his time as a wilderness outfitter and experience exploring the woods as shaping how he understands the land.

Lane is especially interested in capturing easily overlooked moments. By taking long exposures at night, he explores how the landscape transforms after daylight disappears. Through his photography, Lane aims to capture the physical traces of life and document subjects as they change and disappear.

“A photograph can become more than an image of a beautiful place; over time, it can serve as a record that a person, structure, landscape, or moment existed,” he explained. “Through this work, I hope to preserve a small piece of the Northwoods as it exists during my lifetime.”

Lane’s work will be displayed at the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery throughout October 2026.
