Sawtooth Mountain Ski Hill Gallery

A supplement to our article "Sawtooth Mountain Ski Hill" in the winter 2013 - 2014  edition of the Overlook, the newsletter of the Cook County Historical Society.

The Sawtooth Mountain Ski Hill located on the hill overlooking Grand Marais was hugely popular with local residents in the 50s and 60s. It was a first-rate attraction for area visitors even drawing the Central United States Downhill and Slalom Championships in the early 50s.

Good Harbor Hill

Good Harbor Hill was settled when Mathias Johnson and his family homesteaded in 1889.  His first home burned in a forest fire in 1894 and was rebuilt.  Most early settlers were Norwegian.  Good Harbor Hill was never a separate township, but was part of Grand Marais Township, disbanded in the Depression of the 1930s.
 
Life was hard on Good Harbor Hill and farming was marginal.  Most had to supplement their incomes with fishing or logging.  Lena Helmerson tells of life on Good Harbor Hill:
