On Tuesday, October 19th, the members of the Cook County Historical Society are in for a treat at this year’s annual dinner and meeting. Of course, the food and company will be terrific. But you definitely can't miss the opportunity to hear our guest speaker talk about his career as a Lake Superior commercial fisherman.
Walter Sve was born to Norwegian immigrants Ragnvald and Ragnhild Sve who settled in the area near the Split Rock Lighthouse. Like so many folks in those days, the family made a living on the bountiful herring in the Big Lake. In addition they built fish boxes needed by the many other fishermen up and down the shore; later they built cabins to accommodate the growing number of tourists. Walter has carried on his family’s tradition. He and his own son continue to fish to this day.
With the unique gift of a story-teller, Walt will share experiences with remarkable detail. You’ll hear how he faced Lake Superior’s storms to save his fishing nets and fought big business to save the commercial fishing industry. Entertaining and educational – you’ll laugh and learn from Walter Sve’s recollections!
