About This Photo

Hazel "Henry" Mayhew

Hazel "Henry" Mayhew arrived in Cook County c1870 and is considered the "modern" founder of Grand Marais.

A prospector, business man and political leader he was a very likeable individual known as "grandpa". Henry is holding pigeons. In the late 1890's pigeons were sometimes used for communication on Lake Superior boats, trained to return to their base if released to carry a message of distress.
